Maple Sugaring

A New England Tradition

Steve’s Sugar Shack is the continuation of a lifelong dream for owner Stephen Holt. Steve first started tapping trees and making maple syrup when he was 12 years old, inspired by his neighbors and mentors Harley Lemery and Murray Clapp. He always loved the tradition of sugaring in New England, and he loved doing his part to keep that tradition alive here in Westhampton, Massachusetts.

Years later, Steve is fulfilling that dream through Steve’s Sugar Shack. You can come enjoy breakfast featuring pure maple syrup made right on site. Part of the experience is to watch the syrup being made, and to have Steve explain the whole process…from tapping the trees, to gathering the sap, to boiling it down, to giving free taste samples of different grades of syrup, to the sale of maple syrup, cream and candy right here on our shelves.

And sitting down to breakfast here is also different than in many other sugar houses in the area. We feature long tables where family and friends and neighbors and strangers sit and eat together like one big family, reminiscent of community and church suppers. After a long, cold winter, we feel a wonderful community spirit as people catch up with one another over pancakes.
